Two members of the Taunton Deane Visually Impaired Bowling Club took part in the Visually Impaired Pairs Championship at Nottingham on 17/18th February. This event is organised by Visually Impaired Bowls England (VIBE) which is the National organisation for visually impaired bowlers. The championship attracted entries from all over the country, many of the pairs having won the championship in previous years.
Our two representatives, Phil Dutton and Dave Wood (both of Taunton) did not have an easy draw having to play most of the winners from previous years. However, with some solid bowling in the initial rounds they progressed to the semi-finals where, once again, they were up against previous winners of the tournament. They played an excellent set of ends and ran out easy winners.
In the final the opposition was tough and after taking an early lead they were pegged back to 8 – 5. This was when they put together an excellent set of ends to run out 15 – 5 winners.
This was an excellent performance from two young bowlers who will now move on to take part in several more tournaments throughout the year. Of course, having won a tournament the other players will be looking out for them so they will need to perform to the highest standard if they are to achieve more success.
The visually impaired section at Taunton Deane Bowling Club, Blackbrook, has been running for over twenty years and we currently have fifteen members. if there is anyone else out there who fancies giving bowling a try then please contact us to find out how we play visually impaired bowls. You will be surprised how well you can do!
